SHORT RANGE WIRELESS & COMMS CONNECT

Short range wireless technologies are an integral part of the Internet of Things era. Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth "Smart" and "Smart Ready", Wi-Fi, WLAN, RFID, ANT+, RF4CE, Zigbee, IrDA and NFC.

But how to select with so many different technologies?

A joint presentation by Clarinox Technologies and Tait Communication at Comms Connect Conference, Melbourne Australia, November 20 - 22 comms-connect.com.au, will be discussing characteristics of short range technologies and how this additional connectivity can facilitate access to critical information.

Multiple wireless technologies are being built into a wide variety of products. Within the Radio Communications market, short range wireless technologies are becoming increasingly important. Short range wireless can extend the PMR radio functionality far beyond traditional voice communication. Clearly wireless helps to reduce infrastructure cost but the real driving force is the user experience - the convenience and freedom that mobility provides to the end user. Short range wireless can increase business effectiveness as well as workforce safety for a range of PMR radio users such as utility workers, line men, public safety workers and police.

Tait and Clarinox commenced working together when Clarinox supplied Bluetooth protocol stack software and engineering services to assist Tait with the addition of Bluetooth connectivity to the Tait radio products. Since that time Tait has assisted Clarinox with the Beta testing of the Clarinox Jannal Design Environment Software which reduces the effort to add wireless connectivity to embedded devices.

Express Logic and Clarinox Deliver Full Bluetooth Support for ThreadX® Platforms

Design West, ESC Summit, San Jose, CA, April 23, 2013 -Express Logic, Inc., and Clarinox Technologies announced the availability of the Clarinox full-featured Bluetooth communications stack support for Express Logic's widely-deployed ThreadX® RTOS. Clarinox's partnership with Express Logic provides an optimal environment for engineers developing products with Bluetooth, WiFi, GPRS/3G and other embedded short range wireless communications capabilities including RFID, Zigbee, and NFC.

Clarinox's short range solutions are robust and highly visible which empowers the developer with many development tools. It is the culmination of their work and continuous development on high quality middleware since 2001. The ClarinoxBlue Bluetooth stack eliminates the intrinsic complexity of Bluetooth implementations and increases the developer's visibility into the system-features that have made Clarinox a desired connectivity solution provider. "Analysts predict that the number of connected devices could reach 50 billion by 2020, mushrooming the growth of the Internet of Things," noted Trish Messiter, CEO of Clarinox. "This partnership is tailored for this burgeoning market. The majority of these devices will include multiple wireless capabilities and Express Logic's ThreadX is one of the most widely deployed RTOS platforms. Our integrated solution provides a critical one-stop solution for connected consumer, medical and industrial devices."

Express Logic's ThreadX® RTOS offers a robust library of application-callable operating system services that simplify and optimize the performance of embedded systems. Designed for such microcontroller-based applications, ThreadX features a memory footprint as small as 2KB, which enables it to reside in even the most limited on-chip MCU memory. ThreadX provides preemptive, real-time, priority-based scheduling for optimum responsiveness and high performance, and includes advanced technology such as Preemption-ThresholdTM Scheduling.

"Many of our 1.5 billion ThreadX deployments have been included Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity whether for smartphones or other Internet-connected devices," confirmed William E. Lamie, President of Express Logic. "With the integration of Clarinox's Bluetooth and other short-range wireless communication solutions, we now can offer our customers a more complete platform for their applications."

What is going on in the wireless technologies world.

For more than a decade Clarinox has been providing companies with the ability to integrate wireless connetivity into their products; but times have changed, and the speed of change is picking up. It is our view that the wireless technologies world is now undergoing exponential growth not dissimilar to the microprocessor industry over the last 4 decades. Since the first 8 bit processor by Intel hit the streets in 1973, the performance of computing hardware doubled every 12-18 months - Moore's law. While the direct translation may not apply, what we do see in the wireless world is the number of technologies increase to cater for different needs; high data, low power, low cost. Price and power consumption of wireless systems reduces continuously, similar to what happened with microprocessors.

The increased adaptation of wireless technologies by smart phones and tablets is clearly visible; WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, FM radio and 3G/LTE technologies all in a handheld computing devices suddenly enabled the world to think in ways unimaginable a decade ago. These smart devices are now suddenly becoming the user interface for many applications and services that run somewhere else in the cloud, and the impact extends far beyond the consumer electronics world.

One industry impacted is automotive. The impact is driven by demand for same usage scenarios in the automotive environment as elsewhere. If you can listen to your music from your iPhone while jogging why not continue into the car? Why not be able to access not just voice calls but SMS/emails/tweets/facebook updates while in the vehicle? Simple questions that pose some challenges - safety, interoperability, hugely differing product lifespan (consumer electronics vs vehicle). Challenges that require engineers to have good visibility, good tools, built in future proofing and upgrade strategies.
